The Beat Movement

This is the main site for most of Dr. Kurt Hochenauer's online literature courses at the University of Central Oklahoma. The current course is The Beat Movement. In this course, we read, study, and interpret the fictions and poems of writers who formed what is known as the Beat Movement in this country during the 1950s. Focusing on the writers Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs, the course explores social and political structures that eventually brought about the American counterculture movement of the 1960s. During the course, we will apply such poststructuralist reading techniques as deconstruction, feminist, Marxist, postcolonialist, and new historicist to undermine and subvert traditional constructs of American hegemony and mythology. As we read and write about the texts, we will improve our communication and critical thinking skills.
